otherwise know as the US for those Aussies not aware of the generous servings of most American food places :)

It’s nearly one in the morning and I’ve just arrived in Columbus Ohio after a very long 24hrs of travelling. Qantas had my love for all of 2 hrs after upgrading me to business class, then lost it again by delaying the plane 3 hrs and not giving us any clue as to why. We suspect they were mashing plane loads together to free up more planes for Europe, but this was never actually confirmed. So of course, I had to make a mad dash in San Fran to make my plane and, as often happens, I got held up at customs. My carry-on, which had cleared Melb & Syd without problems raised a huge fuss in San Fran and had the customs folks all in a dither. Because you know, a small box of fridge magnets is an extremely dangerous weapon. lol. I know, I know, in this day and age it’s better safe than sorry, but why make it through two scanning stations and not the third? (oh I know why–it’s Murphy’s law–if you’re in a rush and late for something, everything that can go wrong will. lol)

Anyway, I’m going to try and do daily updates of events here at RT, and if I can find the hotspots often enough, I’ll also be tweeting and facebooking. ANd hopefully, if the camera behaves itself, there will be pics.

As a Columbus native, might I suggest:

A day at Easton Towne Center (if you enjoy shopping, this is a lovely place, though busy on the weekends.) Easton is known for the wide variety of stores and restaurant options. Also, Shadowbox Cabaret is there, which is a fun little comedy/rock & roll club.

Since the RT Convention is downtown, I would also suggest finding German Village (known for Schmidts Sausage Haus – They have very good fudge as well), you could also visit the Arena District (many clubs, bars, and nightlife there), or wander down to COSI/Veterans Memorial.

Though, I have to say, my biggest recommendation would be visiting The Ohio State University. It is one of the largest universities in the country (boasting a student population of over 50,000), and it’s football (American style) team is well known. I have to admit I’m suggesting this because I graduated from OSU and I currently work there, but it is a prized possession of Columbus, Ohio. We are very supportive of our Buckeyes here. :)

Lastly, Cedar Point is home of two of the tallest roller-coasters in the world. It’s about a two hour drive from Columbus, but it’s worth it if you are up for a thrill.

Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the fresh fruits and veggies!
